The palace-and-park ensemble of Tsarskoe Selo is a treasure trove of things to see and places to go.
The Catherine Palace and park ensemble is a impressive monument of world-ranking architecture and park design dating from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries. World famous architects, sculptors and painters realized the ideas of the crowned heads. Tsarskoye Selo is a fine example of Baroque and Classical architecture and it was the first place in the Russian capital where interiors decorated in the Moderne (Art Nouveau) style appeared.
The compositional centre of the ensemble is the Catherine Palace – the grand imperial summer residence , Rastrelli’s enormous late-Baroque palace, with its seemingly endless rows of gilded atlantes, has some of the most extravagant interiors in Europe, including the world-famous Amber Room.
Across the Catherine Park there are grand palaces and intimate pavilions, bridges and marble monuments, and also exotic structures imitating Gothic, Turkish and Chinese architecture that invest little corners of the parks with a romantic atmosphere.
